Spanish numbers Over 100
Here you will find Spanish numbers over 100. It is a good idea to learn numbers when learning Spanish as they are such an important part of everyday life such as shopping. To learn these it would be a good idea to ensure you know the numbers from 1 - 99 before beginning this next step of study. I found that by practising while out and about really helped, for example in the supermarket I converted prices from English to Spanish and said the Spanish equivalent of numbers in my head. Try it, it helps!
When learning the numbers 1 - 99 you will have noticed there is the contraction rule, remember if you wish to say 16, 17 or 18 in Spanish for example, you learned to put the two numbers together, with the (y) in the middle such as dieciséis...deiz y séis .
This rule does also apply to cardinal numbers over 100 such as 416, 516 etc thus now you can see how important it is to learn Spanish numbers up to 99 first.
Spanish Numbers Over 100
Okay, the Spanish for 100 is cien or ciento. However there are differences as to when each is used. The number for 100 on its own is cien and if you wish to say there are 100 of something then cien is what you would use.
An example of this is cien gatos....(one hundred cats)
cien perros...(one hundred dogs)
You will notice that cien is used regardless of the gender of the noun, fairly easy to remember this one.
When forming numbers with 100 then ciento is used, for example
110 - ciento diez
115 - ciento quince
120 - ciento veinte
You will notice the absence of the (y) in the above numbers. This is because it is only used with numbers from 31 to 99 within the hundreds. For example ciento cuarenta y dos is 142, ciento/100, cuarenta/40, dos/2.
Other examples of this
156 - ciento cincuenta seis
172 - ciento setenta dos
198 - ciento noventa ocho
Spanish Numbers In The Hundreds
When working with the numbers in the hundreds then the plural form of ciento is used - cientos, alongside the other number. There is no (y) when using numbers in the hundreds, it is written and pronounced as one word. There are certain irregularities here ( as is common in the Spanish language).
When using numbers in the hundreds the gender rules apply, for example anytime there are from 200 - 900 of anything then it becomes quatrocientos perros (masculine) 400 dogs.
quatrocientos gatos (feminine), 400 cats - in other words, lots of cats and dogs!
From 200 - 900
200 - doscientos
300 - trescientos
400 - quatrocientos
500 - quinientos - irregular
600 - seiscientos
700 - setecientos - irregular
800 - ochocientos
900 - novecientos - irregular
Spanish numbers Over 1000
The Spanish for thousand is simply mil. This is the form to use with other numbers such as
1000 - mil
15000 - quince mil
100000 - cien mil
2,340 - dos mil trescientos cuarenta
555445 - quinientos cincuenta y cinco mil quatrocientos cuarenta cinco
Spanish Numbers In The Millions
The word for a million in Spanish is un millón.
Here is another Spanish rule, when saying a million the un (a) is used. To change to the plural form simply add es and take away the accent.
Examples
1241000 - mil doscientos cuarenta y uno
2346022 - dos millones trescientos cuarenta y seis mil veintidos
