A classroom environment is a setting with specific standardrequirements on the makeup of the environment. The environment withinthe classroom vary from the physical and the social environment, theeffective materials required for teaching as well as the standardcurriculum for effective learning. The classroom setting should besafe and comfortable for all students within the classroom. Theenvironments should support relationships while at the same timeallows for exploration amongst the learners.
The physical environment within a classroom plays a big role infostering effective learning amongst students within a classroom. Thephysical environment within a classroom is actively variable inimpacting the morale and the learning ability of students. Therefore,the teacher should involve the students in the process organizing theclassroom. The involvement of student with the arrangement empowersthe students, develops a community within the classroom while at thesame time increases the motivation of students to learn (Dickinson, &Tabors, 2001).
Arrangement of the space within the classroom is of importance. Thephysical layout within a classroom reflects the teaching style thatis used in the classroom. The organization of students should varyfrom individual learning, having partners, being in small groups tobeing in large groups. The teaching style will determine the way thatthe class is organized to facilitate effective learning amongst allstudents. The arrangement should however give room for movementwithin the classroom.
Desk placement also plays a significant in promoting effectivelearning amongst learners. The desks should be arranged in a way thatstudents have enough space between them during the process oflearning. Student should nonetheless be able to have contact andinteract with each other at the same time (Dickinson, & Tabors,2001). Desks can be arranged in cooperate groups as this is the mosteffective method of arrangement.
The design within the classroom space should give space for placementof print media. The classroom requires to be finished with learningequipment, books, materials that have the necessary information forlearning within the classroom. Decorations and learning resourcesthat reveal several purposes of print and that deliver learners withmultiple opportunities to explore print in various forms should beinclude within the classrooms. The arrangement of the class shouldalso allocate spec for access of digital services. That is spaceshould be available to allow students to use laptops and othergadgets.
Them Social Environment
The social environment within the classroom assists with fosteringthe right behaviors. The classroom environment should be able tobuild a community of learners who are comfortable around each other.The students should know each other’s name and get to know eachother through various activities. With such relationships, studentsstarts to feel alike a family within the classroom (Spencer, 2001).
Making learning relevant is another important tip for ensuring thatthe social environment within the class is effective for learning.The teacher should come up with different strategies that wouldintern keep the students motivated with the class activities and thelearning process. For instance, student can write goals andobjectives that they would like to have attained within a period.Such activities keep students focus in the course of their studies.Such activities also create a competitive environment within theclassroom (Spencer, 2001). Students will hence work hard in order toensure they emerge the best performers. The classroom can henceeasily progress.
The teacher should make it known to the learners that you care aboutthe, the teacher should be able to provide special attention to allstudents while concentrating on the weak points of the students.Special concentration on students one by one give them a sense ofcaring from the teacher’s side. Students thus work hard not todisappoint the teacher. Students are also likely to behave with goodmanners as they strive not to disappoint their teacher.
The teacher should incorporate active involvement within theclassroom. The teachers should additionally be able to set highstandards and expectations that would in turn motivate students towork hard and behave according to the standard behaviors (Spencer,2001). The designing of the classroom activities should incorporatefun activities in the midst of the classroom activities. The funactivities should however be able to pass information or knowledge ofthe class syllabus. Learning through fun activities provide studentswith an avenue for remembering and retaining the information learntin the classroom.
The materials used for learning within a classroom should support theoverall goals and objectives with the curriculum. The overall goalfor the use of the different teaching resources must support thelearning outcomes of the curriculum. All mediums of presentation musttherefore consider how the of curriculum fits on the teaching methods(Prince Edward Island, 2008). Hence there are specific guidelinesthat are used for the criterion and selection of teaching materials.The selected materials should have more strengths compared toweaknesses.
The content and format of the teaching materials should be consideredwhile selecting teaching materials. The author of the materialsshould be competent, the contents should as well be appropriate forthe subject area as well as the age of the students. The materialsused should have aesthetic, literary and social value to thelearners.
The methodology of the teaching procedure should foster maximumlearning and retention of information as much as possible. Theteaching procedure should include more activities during the learningprocess compared to lectures (Prince Edward Island, 2008).. Theteaching procedure and the materials being used should encouragedrawing students into group and promote co-operative learning. Theactivities should as well provide individual growth amongst thestudents (Prince Edward Island, 2008)..
Learning resources should include evaluation and assessmentprocedures within them. The methods should be supportive of thecontinuous learning by the learners within the classrooms. Thelearning procedure should provide room for both formative andsummative assessment of the performances and development of thestudents.
The social considerations of the teaching procedures should beappropriate and according to the ethical standards of learning andteaching. The resources used for teaching and learning should reflectsensitivity to different genders and the sexual orientation of thestudents. The resources should promote diversity and enhance equalitywithin the teaching environment. The designing of the learningresources should be able to motivate students and staffs on theimprovement of their attitudes and behaviors. The resources used forteaching should finally recognize the presence of student withdisabilities within the system. The resources should thereforeinterpret their needs.
Curriculum and Routines.
The backbone of a well-run classroom is the presence of classroomroutines. The routines provide students with the adequate structurethat they can count on while grow and develop from at the same time.The routines used within the learning atmosphere should providestudents with room for reading, writing, listening and speaking. Theabove provides students with room for multiple development within thelearning set up (Reutzel & Clark, 2011).
The routine used for teaching should provide exposure to variedvocabulary within the classroom setting. Students’ ability torightfully communicate with each other as well as teacher within theschool depends on the ability of the students to know the appropriatevocabularies from their lessons (Reutzel & Clark, 2011). Theroutine should be designed in a way that students expand theirvocabularies while also practicing their speaking and oratory skills.The routine sued should also force students to communicate with eachother using formal languages while within the classroom environment.With such a routine, students will be able to expand on thevocabularies.
The teacher should also develop a routine that foster cooperativelearning within the classroom environment. With cooperative learningstudents are able to develop and grow together as one unit or asgroup members. Cooperative learning improves the motivation andconfidence levels of learners within the classroom. Cooperativelearning also increase the comfort levels of student within theclassroom. Other routines used within the classroom can also involvestudents coming upon with their weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearlyperformance goals (Reutzel & Clark, 2011). The performance levelsof students will significantly increase.
In conclusion, learning within the classroom is significantlydependent on the comfort students get within the classroom. Thephysical and social environments within classroom should fostereffective learning. The learning material and routine should alsofoster the above.
