INT.REAL PEOPLE TALKING

JERRY

Itbothers me a lot because people are not entirely honest with eachother. We don’t really care what’s going on

TERRY

Yea,I hate small talk, even in church or with family, you feel like youhave to pretend like everything is fine and whatever!

JERRY

Andwhen people ask like what’s new, you either say nothing much, orbasically the positives which is basically small talk. In reality youdon’t tell them what’s actually going on

JOB

Yea,sometimes while talking to someone new or even my grandparents, it’slike going on an almost scripted dialogue and it’s crazy (They allgiggle). I’m fed up with, and just going to tell them what’sreally going on in my life but (leans back) I don’t.

JERRY

Andthen there are these responses, like hey! Whatsup? How is it going? Imean, are you going to say well I’m doing well, despite the factthat I just got fired from my job, and my girlfriend just broke upwith me (they all giggle). No! You’re not going to tell them allthe bad things about you, especially since the moment are so quick.Thinking about all the times people lie, it has become American smalltalk habit

(Dooropens as Jason bumps in)

JASON

Hey!Whatsup guys, (smiling) so are we getting something to eat, or I’minterrupting something

TERRY

(Signalingwith her hands), yea, we were just talking about small talk

JASON

(Giggling)ohh small talk, I hate small talk

(Theyall laugh)

(Continuing)

Justthe other day I was at the airport with my guitar, and this old mancomes up to me and he’s like, (Imitating the old man), so you gotyour guitar? And I was like (Nodding) yeap yeap, I got my guitar.

(Theyall giggle)

(Continuing)

(Expressingwith his hands) I just felt this horrible pressure to come up withsome interesting conversation starter and I hate that pressure, youknow, there are times when you can actually come up with somethinglike it’s so real like what happens with one of your family memberor some random person but it almost never happens.

JERRY

(Giggling)I mean good for those kids who their parents were basically theirbest friends, like could just tell them everything. For me it wasnever the case, and quite frankly, I never really got closer to myparents, now that I think about it, very few like genuineconversations, like there so real you could tell them whatever youwant. They are so few. Me and my dad, we wouldn’t talk about thenews, sport or anything. They are actually so few that I can rememberthem vividly in my mind

(Terrychips in)

TERRY

Yea,there are those conversations that you can play back in your head, ofthings that has just happened, I actually find myself doing that alot, like some conversations actually happened and some neverhappened. The sad part as by me, I find myself remembering more ofthose that never happened!

Howdialogue differs from everyday conversation

Thereare so many aspects involved in conversing that cannot be adequatelycaptured in a dialogue. Conversations include many aspects likefacial expressions among others that cannot be completely noted.Additionally, interruptions are quite many. Sometimes a person doesnot completely finish his sentiments before being interrupted howeversmall it is. Capturing all interruption points is makes conversationsquite different from dialogues.
