What do Employers Look for in a Professional Employee?
Findinga job is a goal for many students studying for various professionsand throughout one’s life, a person works for numerous employers.Each employer has different requirements regarding what they want inan employee, but knowledge, skills, values as well as qualities areshared across employers. An employee demonstrates professionalismwhich covers a wide array of qualities, skills, values as well as theknowledge that are vital to achieving the goals of the employer. Aprofessional employee goes beyond the call of duty in doing theirjob. Hart (2013) argues that an employer seeks beyond the major theemployee specializes in and looks for other attributes that enablethe seamless functioning at the workplace.
Amongthe qualities employers look for in employees are skills that helpthem in achieving the set objectives. According to Hart (2013), “theconsensus among employers is that critical thinking, innovation and abroad set of skills are important in the workplace”. Criticalthinking, problem-solving and innovation allow the employees toperform efficiently and effectively and with minimum supervision.Problem-solving and critical thinking enable employees to findsolutions, and this is a desirable trait to the employer. Employersalso look for interpersonal skills when looking for employees.Interpersonal skills are useful in interacting and relating at theworkplace. They include adaptability, communication skills,leadership skills, and listening skills.
Communication skills are vital because there other employees andcustomers at the workplace. Teamwork and leadership skills are alsoimportant because they enable cooperation for the attainment ofobjectives. Interpersonal skills enable team working at the workplacewhich is also a quality sort after by employers. Cultural awarenessis also a quality sort after by employers because of the currentdiversity in the workplace. Hence, a professional employee shouldexhibit awareness and sensitivity to the diverse groups of people.Technical literacy is another quality required in the current digitalworld and hence an employee should exhibit some knowledge in handlingtechnology that makes work easier ((NACE, 2012). Employers also lookfor values among their employees that are the personalcharacteristics and personalities traits, and they contribute towardsethical working. “Core characteristics that employers look forinclude flexibility and motivation” (Newton et al., 2005). Theseare the most sort after characteristics because they show awillingness to work and learn, and they are enthusiastic.
Values that employers seek include hard work, honesty, integrity,positive attitude, reliability, self-confidence, and self-motivation.Values influence the sense of right and wrong and hence are importantfor employers as they have a direct impact on ethical conduct at theworkplace. These values enable the employees to work effectively andattain the goals that are set by their employers. An employee withthese values is an asset and has the ability to be ethical, exhibitprofessionalism and respond positively to any changes or problems atthe workplace. Employers also look for employees who areknowledgeable both in their field of work in other general areas ofimportance. Hence, an employee should be knowledgeable as well aswilling to learn, and this helps in improved performance at theworkplace ethic (NIU, 2015). Employers also look for employees with astrong work.
In conclusion, employers seek skills as well as values which form thequalities needed in employees. The skills include teamwork,communication, leadership, problem-solving, critical thinking,technical, leadership, interpersonal that are vital in attainingworkplace objectives. The values include all characteristics thatform a flexible, honest and motivated employee. The skills, knowledgeand values contribute towards the qualities that employers look forin employees.
